🌿 Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' – Orange-Red Willow-Leaved Knotweed for Vibrant Midgrounds

Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is a fast-growing aquatic stem plant native to Asia, admired for its narrow, willow-like leaves and rich coloration when submerged. At Aquarium Plants Factory nursery, we cultivate this plant emersed, where its leaves remain bright green and its stems grow sturdy and upright. Once introduced into a planted aquarium, the leaves undergo a dramatic transformation—shifting to glowing tones of orange-red to pink under strong light and CO₂ supplementation.

This species is sometimes mislabeled in the hobby as Persicaria sp. 'Red', Polygonum sp. 'Kawagoneum', or incorrectly as Persicaria sp. 'Sao Paulo', but its vivid coloration and graceful form make it a standout in any layout. Underwater, its 8–12 cm long, 0.6–1 cm wide leaves provide elegant motion and contrast in the midground of aquascapes. In emersed setups like paludariums or wabi-kusa, the plant develops a more shrub-like growth and can even flower when left untrimmed.

Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' thrives with nutrient-rich substrates, regular dosing of macro- and micronutrients, and steady CO₂. As the plant matures, older stems may become leggy or drop lower leaves—regular trimming and replanting of top cuttings are key for a clean, vibrant display.
