Math Mammoth Grade 7-A Worktext (2025 edition) is the first student book for 7th grade mathematics, and part of the Math Mammoth Grade 7 Curriculum (pre-algebra).Please note: this is the black-and white version, with grayscale interior pages.Being a worktext means that the book contains both the instruction (the "text") as well as the exercises (the "work"), all written directly to the student. This makes it where many students can study independently from the book.FeaturesMath Mammoth focuses on conceptual understanding. It explains the "WHY", so your children can understand the math, not just learn "HOW" to do it.The curriculum is mastery-oriented. This means it concentrates fairly long on a topic, delving into its various aspects. This promotes conceptual understanding, as opposed to spiral curricula that often tend to jump from topic to topic too much. The curriculum has no separate teacher's manual, nor is it scripted. The introduction to each chapter has some notes for the teacher concerning the material in the chapter. All the instruction is written directly to the student in the worktext, and there also exist accompanying videos where you can see Maria herself teach the material.Very little teacher preparation is required.Concepts are often explained with visual models, followed by exercises using those models. After each chapter introduction, you will find a list of Internet links and resources (games, quizzes, animations, etc.) that can be used for fun, illustrations, and further practice. This book, student worktext 7-A, covers an introduction to algebra, (chapter 1), integers (chapter 2), one-step equations (chapter 3), rational numbers (chapter 4), and equations and inequalities (chapter 5). The rest of the topics are covered in the 7-B worktext. We start out with an introduction to basic algebra, which is in many ways a review of the same topics from 6th grade. The first chapter reviews the order of operations, the concepts of an expression and equation, and the distributive property. Students learn about the commutative and associative properties of addition and multiplication, and they simplify expressions that don’t involve negative numbers. In chapter 2, we study integers and their operations in detail. The four operations of integers are explained with the help of two visual models: the number line and counters, providing an intuitive understanding of the processes. Students need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers when they solve equations in chapter 3. In the end of the chapter students also learn about negative fractions. In chapter 3, students study one-step equations. They already know the basics of how to solve these types of equations from 6th grade, but this time we use negative numbers in them.Chapter 4 is titled Rational Numbers, which are simply fractions and certain decimals, so the student is already very familiar with them. The goal of the chapter is to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide both positive and negative fractions and decimals and also do more complex calculations with them. We also solve simple equations involving fractions and decimals.Lastly, in chapter 5, students solve various types of linear equations and practice writing such for simple word problems. We also study linear inequalities, but not to the same depth as linear equations. The second half of 7th grade mathematics is covered in the Math Mammoth Grade 7-B Worktext, available separately. Also available separately is an answer key book, and a book containing chapter tests and additional cumulative review lessons. Read more
